sorry i haven`t had time to be on but work as usual calls, the new year has started as the old one left...a disaster, my sons mates dad put a huge box on his car as `a joke` scratched it badly, said he would sort it out in the new year, Rob got a quote, the dad now says sorry I am paying nothing

The idea in such situations is to forget about principles, and be pragmatic. The question in this case is how big is the damage, and if the damage is worth getting into a battle. If it doesn't then don't. If it does, then you have a few avenues, starting from a friendly conversation, all the way to court.
The question is alwasy, cost vs. benefit. Risk vs. Return. just put the emotions aside and the answer will normally present itself-

Not sure what you can do, but it must be infuriating, bodywork on cars is so expensive to put right. Could the man be persuaded to at least make a contribution?
